Share the values or shift gears!

Miracles

We work in teams throughout the whole life. Each of us is always surrounded by other human beings. We are interacting, sharing, working with them in order to achieve common goal.

Does not it seem a little odd that biology states life as a constant war for survival? That we have to compete, fight in order to have life we desire?

Well, it looks like this statement is not very efficient anymore. Today collective actions gain more and more room in our lives. We set the goal, gather the team and then reach this goal together. We are starting to appreciate the value that different person can bring. Now it is quite obvious that only in collaboration people are able to multiply the outcome.
And if you still believe in old pattern of constant fight and competition it’s time to “shift gears”. There is infinitely large number of proofs in very different aspects of our lives.

The teamwork of the Blue Angels – renowned flight demonstration team- inspired Scott Beare and Michael McMillan to write a book “The Power of Teamwork”.

This great example shows high importance of commitment of each participant. Certainly, the flight team organization is different from regular company structure, but it helps to underlie principles for success. Using the key factors, such as sharing common values in every team activity, having effective leader upfront, creating synergy, job delegation, “I can” attitude of every participants can create a “dream” team that brings you “dream” result.

One more classic example of how-it-should-be-done is “The great escape”. This story goes back to 1944, Nazi Prisoner of War Camp. 250 prisoners decided to escape from the prison at one night. The plan was to dig a tunnel. One goal, one mission brought these people together. They had clear separation of responsibilities: digging, distracting/blackmailing security, providing lightning etc. Moreover the plan included well-coordinated systematical preparation, execution, after –escape movements.

Unfortunately, only 86 men escaped and all of the prisoners were caught in the end. But this example shows the importance of high level commitment. Here we can see how people (even in the team of so many persons and “deep-cover” activities included) can collaborate with each other in the face of common goal.

Inspired by the marvelous examples of teamwork, now here come the questions that every participant of any team should ask himself:

What is your team goal? Do you have a clear vision of it? Do you share these values?
Do all your team activities align with this?
Does your ego allow you to be a team player?
What benefits this activity will bring to a team?
Is the game worth the candle for you?
Do you participant in the game? What role do you have?
Is the communication open and honest within the group?
Do you see yourselves as a complete unit?
Are there any unsolved conflicts?
